This series addresses the phenomena of poc femmes not being allowed to express anger in a way that feels genuine and real to us. When we do, we often face backlash or are swept under the rug of a stereotype.
I’m painting these faces of friends that are ambigiously angry… we know they are angry because of the title, but without the title anger may not be the assumed emotion. We often have to hide anger or sadness with a straight face or an even temperament, our true emotions only showing through leaks in our eyebrows or nostrils or turned-down lips. People only think were angry when we’re a spectacle.
Let this series be a reminder that us poc femmes can be just as angry, but likely more angry, than you can. And our anger is real and valid. Expressing negative emotions is another privilege we may not always have.
